Match Reports: Versus Ducks & Bulldogs

Match Reports from both weekend games as we come away with six points.

Last weekend saw us ice in our first double-header of the season as we faced the newly formed Ducks on Saturday at home before travelling north to Bradford on the Sunday to play against the Bulldogs. Our first six point weekend was there for the taking and we did that with style as we outscored our opponents 20-4 over the weekend.

The first game was at home to the Deeside Ducks, our first game against this side this season and we would start the weekend with a convincing win. Charles Coney would get us started with a bullet from the left cirlce on the powerplay, followed up by a goal from Ollie Dixon after great work from Sumner down low to find Dixon at the top of the crease. The three goal first period was finished off by Jamie Lewis who would get a tip off of an Upton shot.

The second period saw more dominance by the NIHL Blaze. It started off under a minute in as Jordan Stokes would score in his season debut after a turn over in the neutral zone. The next goal would come just over 6 minutes later as a scramble in front found it's way to Ollie Harris who roofs it over the goalie to make it five-nil. It would soon become six as a great play off the half wall would see Coney go round one and then two, and fire it bar down to get his second of the game. Two goals from Kyle Nash to end the second, which included one highlight reel play between the three forwards would cap off a five-nil period and it would finish eight-nil after forty.

What was eight, soon became nine and then ten. Mellett would get the first goal in the third just thirty-two seconds in, followed by Ethan Wheeldon finding the net just thirteen seconds later. A minute and a half later, Kyle Nash would go bar down from the slot to get his hat-trick. Deeside would then finally get on the board after a pass to the front of the net, nicks off a skate and finds it's way in. The team would then respond with two goals to finish the game and the period, coming from Stokes and Dixon to give them both two in the game and cap off a great thirteen-one win in the weekend opener.

Game two of the weekend would see us travel to Bradford for the first time this season, looking to come away with a maximum of six points in our first double header.

It would start perfectly for both the NIHL Blaze and Kyle Nash as within twenty-five minutes, Nash would record a natural hat-trick for his second hat-trick of the weekend. One even handed and two powerplay goals would have us up by three at the twenty-five minute mark.

A mountain of pressure would come in the second as we also added a fourth, fifth and a sixth. Sam Prosser, Ryan James and Ashton Rudkin would all fire for the NIHL Blaze to make it six-nil coming towards the back end of the second stanza. Bradford though would open their account for the night and cut the deficit to five late in the second and it would end six-one after forty.

The third period would be lost by the NIHL Blaze by a score of two-one. First of the two coming six minutes into the period after a play at the blue line would see Tom Mardell score a short hander for Bradford and he would then score a second eight minutes later from just inside the blue. But in-between those two goals, Rudkin would add his second of the night to add insurance and cap off a great weekend for the team to make us start with three straight wins.

Onto the league leaders Sutton, this weekend.
